So, You Want To Keep Christ In Christmas?

I hope you will take a moment to read and think about this even if you are not a Christian. It is Christmas Eve and I have heard many people speak about keeping Christ in Christmas. They aren’t on a “Down With Santa Clause” campaign or anything like that they just want to keep Jesus, who they know as Emmanual, “God With Us” and the eternal Word Made Flesh, to remain on the stage and to trump the rampant commercialism pushed by our consumer driven culture. Pope Francis tweeted yesterday,

Christmas celebrations are often full of sound. It would be good for us to make room for silence, to hear the voice of Love. @Pontifex

This is great advice in our lives often overpowered by a constant barrage of music, fast paced images, and pressures to do this, that, and the other thing. What would happen I wonder if we were to listen AND follow the voice of love?

Who would we finally forgive?
Where would we finally surrender our stubbornness?
What destructive habit would we finally commit to eliminating?
What selfish attitude would we work to change?
What leap of faith would we make?
What phone call would we make or letter would we write?
What person or family would we seek to help?
Who would we make more time for?
What priorities would we change?

I guess the real question is which gift of love will we choose to unwrap for Christmas? I’ll let you in on a secret. You can open more than one.

May God, who is love incarnate and tore the veil separating heaven from earth to became one of us in all things but sin, inspire us through the celebration of Christmas to listen to the voice of love and to become love’s voice and sing love’s song, becoming love’s light to dispel the darkness in other’s lives and in so doing, brighten our own as well.

God bless you and Merry Christmas!
