The Chair of Saint Peter

Today we remember the Feast of The Chair of Saint Peter the Apostle.  Which must be especially poignant for Benedict XVI this year.  Remember him and his successor as we reflect on sacred scripture.

18k And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church,* and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. 19l I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.* Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

The good folks at DivineOffice.org have shared this with us about today for February 22nd:

Today we celebrate the feast of the Chair of St. Peter. The celebration commemorates the years St. Peter served as the bishop of Rome.  As Pope John Paul II explained, “It sheds light on the special ministry of strengthening and guiding the Church in the unity of the faith which the Lord entrusted to the Head of the Apostles.” Today we are encouraged to pray that the Church in all its different “cultures, languages, and traditions will be unanimous in believing and professing the truths of faith and morals.” This mystery of unity, he explains, comes from “fixing our gaze on Christ.”

And my Ordinary, Bishop Richard Malone of Buffalo,   in the first of what is intended to be a series of weekly messages, also encourages us to pray about this historic passing of the chair which is about to take place.

Here are the Words of the Knights of Columbus “Prayer for the Church”

O Lord Jesus Christ, Supreme Pastor of Your Church,we thank you for the ministry of Pope Benedict XVI and the selfless care with which he has led us as Successor of Peter, and Your Vicar on earth.Good Shepherd, who founded Your Church on the rock of Peter’s faith and have never left Your flock untended, look with love upon us now,and sustain Your Church in faith, hope, and charity.Grant, Lord Jesus, in Your boundless love for us,a new Pope for Your Church who will please You by his holiness and lead us faithfully to You,who are the same yesterday, today, and forever.Amen.
