An Invitation to be Present

What are you doing this Thursday?  If you are anything like me you probably will have to check your appointment calendar to answer that question.  But this Thursday has something on the calendar for the Church that wasn’t there before, a feast day to honor a man whose primary aim was to restore dignity to the people who had been robbed of everything through no fault of their own.

In honor of Damien de Veuster, better known as St. Damien of Molokai, take a moment this week to see who around you has experienced a loss and is suffering.  Maybe they are out of work, or estranged from a family member, or been told they have cancer.  We all know people who are suffering somewhere in the world.  They could even be as close to you as just a few inches away on the coach as you relax in front of the television.  Chances are you won’t be able to fix the problem they are facing.  Reach out to them anyway, be present to them, listen and be yourself.  Sometimes that is the best help of all.
